Maria's Storm Walk
A Story for a Rainy Day
The rain was coming down faster than a jet plane as 11 year old Maria trudged down the street. The weather was frigid and a bitter wind whistled through the icy air. She felt cold and was soaked down to the bone.
As a car hurled down the street through the downpour, it splashed a freezing wave of muddy water onto her new dress! Soaked and muddy, she continued to plod down the street. “Can my day get any worse!?” Maria thought. Unfortunately it did. As she sloshed down the street, she stepped in a ginormous puddle. The puddle was so big, it was as if it was an ocean. It covered the sidewalk and the entire road. To make matters worse, it was more than 6 inches deep! Her entire boot was flooded with
water. At that point she was horribly miserable and depressed. "I'm going to be late for dinner again!" Maria thought. She made her way across the puddle, trying to stay in the shallowest places possible.
She finally made it to her house. She opened the door and was hit with a wave of warmth. It was as comforting as sitting on the beach listening to the waves pound against the shore. Maria walked up the stairs to her room. They groaned with each step she took. When she got to the top she went into her bedroom, and peeled her sopping wet clothes off. Then she went downstairs for a delicious dinner of chicken-noodle soup and bread with butter. As she walked down the stairs, she thought to herself, "Wow, have I had a crazy day!" As soon as she went into the kitchen she was embraced by a huge squeeze of a hug from her mother. "Am I late?" she asked. "Not at all honey," her mother replied. They sat down at the dinner table together. "Mom," Maria said, "have I got a story for you!”
